Thanks for reading (:

The Media World

New Media Technologies

New Media Technologies refer to internet, websites, computer multimedia, and video games. This does not include TV, film, magazines, books or anything else printed. There is always some kind of new media coming out. We have Twitter where there is now being interviews held on the actual website, instead of doing a face to face interview. There are Skype and Facetime in which you can visually talk to someone and see them if they are miles and miles away as long as you have internet. The possibilities are endless with new media technologies! Social sites like Facebook are always changing to meet the needs of new technology.

One of the newest technologies is Stipple. Stipple lets you mouse over a photo that you see on Facebook and get information about the photo, the things that are in the photo and gives you links and maybe a video. Depending on what is in the photo you will get different information and links. Say if you get a photo of Jennifer Lawrence, you mouse over the photo and you would get some information about her like where she was born and her first major role. You would also see a trailer for one of her newest movies, links to different magazines that she’s been in and also information about what she is wearing. So in all Stipple is stinkin’ amazing! And being able to shop right from your Facebook page could get some people in trouble…

Mobile Media

“Significantly, users of the mobile web rose 82 percent between July 2012 and July 2011, while app users grew 85 percent during the same time period. By comparison, PC usage fell by four percent…” according to Nielsen.

Everyone has a smartphone. Mobile media is huge, it’s everywhere. People are on their phones all the time! I know that I am rarely without mine. It’s my calendar, alarm, email, social media, news, and phone. Media on mobile devices has grown tremendously in recent years, and grows every day.

Mobile media has an advantage of being with people 24/7. Nearly all adults have a cell phone. People consider phones to be personal. Getting a text from Sonic about their new milkshake flavors is more personal than seeing the commercial. People also feel more appreciated when getting a personal text message from a certain company or brand. Mobile phones are always on; therefore the message is sent and read instantly. Tracking this kind of advertising is also easy. According to tapit! “When all these factors are combined, they make mobile media marketing one of the best means of marketing in the contemporary market.”

#Trends in #Social #Media

Social media has become the number one activity on the internet. Hashtags are one of the newest fads in social media. Featured on Twitter, Instagram, and tumblr, hashtags have become wildly popular. You add a photo or post a status and hashtag the things that describe it, like this photo from my man crush monday instagram post! Photos have also become pretty popular, everyone would rather see a photo than a status update. Pinterest was a huge fad that started in 2012, it has grown tremendously in the short time that it has been around.

It is also thought that the use of social media on mobile devices will increase in the future, as it has been already, which is over 30 million. There has also been an increase in advertisements on media. Facebook now has ads on the side of the news feed , as well as YouTube and others.

ITS NOT FOR WOMEN?

I have to admit, as a girl that is addicted to Dr Peper, I had a hard time with a product that isn’t for women! Ha! But I believe that they did a great job on this campaign.

Dr Pepper decided to advertise their new drink Dr Pepper TEN and aim towards males age 25 to 34. They targeted this group because research found that men tend to stay away from diet drinks that women drink. So Dr Pepper fixed that and made Dr Pepper TEN.

Running for 13 weeks on Dish, DirectTV and Xbox, three very popular platforms with males. This is the perfect way to advertise to this group. They were able to get coupons and downloadable content, viewers spent 4-6 minutes playing games. 1.67 million visits and nearly 2 million games played with over 88,000 coupon requests to try the new drink. I would say that that was a pretty successful campaign!

Gaming as Media

“Over a mere three decades, the video game has become the entertainment medium of choice for millions of people, who now spend more time in the interactive virtual world of games than they do in watching movies or even television.” -The Medium of the Video Game.

Gaming is not usually thought of as media. I am not a gamer. I have never spent much time considering gaming as I was always very annoyed by my cousins being so focused on their games growing up instead of playing with me. I would have rather played in the mud any day than have to sit and play a video game. I suppose times are different now! Gaming is not only something you can do at home on your playstation anymore, games go with us everywhere we go on our phones and tablets. You can play games on your computer as well as game consoles. Videogames also have a lot of variety. Gaming has definitely changed through the years, as has all media. Lots of work and technology goes into making a videogame.

Newspapers/Magazines/Tablets

According to Azzaro “until 1995, newspapers were the #1 U.S. ad medium.” They are now #3. “In 2006, there were 19,419 magazines in the United States. They generated $32 billion in total sales and $17.7 billion in advertising revenue.”

Newspapers have been around for quite some time now, but they aren’t as popular as they used to be. Newspapers and magazines have been replaced by technology with the younger generations. Some of the older generations still like to read a physical copy of the newspaper every day. The tablet has become the go to device for reading newspaper articles and magazines. It has practically replaced all physical forms of media and books as well. Although magazines are still going pretty strong, they are now available to purchase on devices such as apple products that have a Newsstand app. Many of these are free to download then you pay per copy, easy to view and they go everywhere you go on your phone or tablet so you can pick up reading where you left off.

“Readers, meanwhile, are migrating fast to digital and mobile, a move that accelerated in 2011 with the explosion of tablets and smartphone ownership. Thanks in part to the popularity of apps such as the Apple Newsstand, which make it easy to find and download magazines and other publications, that acceleration is likely to continue.” Studies have shown that people spend more time reading magazines on tablets.

Newspapers like the Amarillo Globe News now have an iPad app available. With this app you can read the newspaper just like you can a physical copy and don’t have to worry about getting that black ink on your fingers! The way newspapers and magazines are being consumed has definitely changed over the years! Even my Grandpa reads the news online!

The evolution of radio

Of all the major inventions of the twentieth century, few have had a more profound impact on people’s lives than radio and television. The radio has changed quite a bit since it first started broadcasting stations in 1920. The first use for the radio was to learn more about what was going on in the news. “Radio was the undisputed king of media” according to Azzaro. It was the primary way hear news before the TV came into the home. Nowadays the radio has shifted from primarily news to primarily music. When radio started out there was AM and FM radio; now satellite, HD, and internet radio have been added.

Satellite radio is obviously transmitted by satellite, and without commercials. I have XM radio myself and I love it! The only downside to this option is the cost. HD radio picks up signals more crisp than regular AM or FM radio, but is still broadcasted on those same channels. There is also internet radio, which is just what it says it is, radio you can listen to on the internet. This is something you would listen to in your house on your computer or on your phone; you can’t use this type of radio in the car. There is no extra charge to use internet radio. Radio stations have broadened into not only a station to listen to while you’re in the car but you can listen on their website and look up contests and such that they have posted. This helps with the growing use of ads on the web.

I know radio use has gone down throughout the years but I still use the radio every day. I mainly listen to music but I also get some of my news from the radio as well. I think radio is going to be around for a very long time. Radio is a great way to advertise since everyone listens to it nearly every day!

OOH

Out of home advertising comes in many different forms. It can be as small as your happy hour sonic drink to a ginormous billboard. And much more in between! The possibilities with out of home advertising are endless: car and bus wraps, benches, airplanes, billboards, sidewalks and more. Marketers have become very creative with their out of home advertisements.

Out of home advertising have several strengths. The first one is great visual impact. You can’t get a bigger ad than a billboard, with vibrant colors. Outdoor advertising is great because everyone sees it, when you drive to work or the mall you see tons of billboards along the way. They are there all the time, not just once a week in a newspaper, outdoor ads are there 24/7. The costs of outdoor advertising are cheaper than running an ad on TV or radio. Out of home comes in so many different formats that its easy for advertisers to find the right one for them.

Out of home also has some weaknesses, the first being that it doesn’t have selectivity. For example, in magazines the reader has made the decision to read that certain magazine. They must have some similarities with what the magazine is all about. With outdoor ads everyone sees them, which can be good but it doesn’t target a specific group of people that would be more likely to buy whatever the advertiser is selling. Ads don’t always get full attention as people may be driving by. Also you can’t say as much on a billboard as you could on a magazine, newspaper or TV ad. The cost to run an out of home ad is fairly cheap, but the work behind it isn’t. Many people see outdoor ads as environmental clutter, according to Azzaro.

Local Media Analysis

The Three Keys to Success:

Matching media with markets: According to the book “The planner’s goal as a marketing partner is to find the perfect media match.” You need to understand your market.

The local market profile: The book says that “You have to know your market…people in the market…media in the market…how things work in your market.” Knowledge is very important in this step!

Research on a local level: “In local media planning and sales, you may have to become your own market research department” according to Azzaro. Everyone needs media research.

According to the book the local media options are: newspapers, radio, television, city and regional magazines, out-of-home, directory advertising, direct, and “new media.”

According to The Amarillo Economic Development Corporation some of the top manufacturing companies are B&W Pantex, Amarillo Gear Company and Bell Helicopter. The top food processors and distributers are Tyson Foods, Ben. E. Keith and Affiliated Foods, Inc. Some of the top employers for business and financial services are Hastings, Nationwide Insurance and AT&T. Amarillo’s top 5 target industries are Aviation/Aerospace, Business & Financial Services, Diversified Manufacturing, Transportation & Logistics and Food Technologies. The population of Amarillo in 2010 was 246,859 and the total households were 90,059. “Amarillo continues to enjoy a strong financial position among Texas and U.S. cities”

Out-of-home: Choice Media- The Secret Place. Choice media would be a great way to promote The Secret Place and give more information about the store and it’s location. Billboards could be very effective for them.

Newspaper: Amarillo Globe News- Amarillo Real Estate. Amarillo Globe News would be an ideal place for Amarillo Real Estate to advertise. Newspapers are a good place to advertise for houses, apartments and such and many people look to the local paper for help finding a home.

Radio: KGNC FM- Amazing Tans. Amazing Tans could run ads and remotes on KGNC, one of the top stations in the panhandle. Who doesn’t listen to the radio? Everyone will hear your ads if your using someone like KGNC.

TV: KFDA- WTAMU. WTAMU could run commercials on the TV station KFDA. As one of the top stations in the panhandle, many people are watching the news and will see the ads from WT, which could be very beneficial!

Measuring Media

Measuring media can be tricky. Most of the time media on the TV is measured according to how many people are watching the show itself and not the commercials, which are the more important part of advertising. I mean I don’t think that advertisers care how many people were watching Grey’s Anatomy last night. I’m pretty sure they would rather know how many people watched their commercial, and how many people changed the channel when it came on.

According to our book, Strategic Media Decisions, “media are measured through a combination of techniques involving meters and diaries. Network television audiences are measured using an electronic device called a people meter.” Nielsen Media Research uses a sample group survey. “Advertisers spend billions of dollars every year based on Nielsen television audience estimates.” Wow! They spend a lot just to find out how many people are watching their stuff! The ANA is now asking Nielsen to start rating commercials, which makes much more sense to me.

Measuring social media is easier than televised media. (Or at least it seems so to me) To measure things on Facebook you can look at how many likes your company has and see how many comments and likes you get on the things you post. Then on Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr you can search hash tags and see how many times you have been tagged on a post or photo. Pretty cool, huh? No need to hire anyone to measure data for you, you’ve got the power to do so at your fingertips.

The relationship of social media and television is becoming even bigger. “People aren’t just consuming content on social networks, they’re actively sharing it. As television becomes more digital – in the form of sharable video clips or articles about a show’s premiere, for example – social media will continue to play an increasingly important role in how consumers discover and engage with various forms of content, including TV.” Radha Subramanyam, SVP of Media Analytics, nielsenwire.

Media & the Super Bowl

So I just realized that the Super Bowl is in less than a week. I probably should have been able to figure this out earlier seeing as how I knew this was our bog topic for the week, but the truth is I know nothing about football. I’m more of a basketball kind of person. I suppose most Americans watch the Super Bowl because they enjoy the game…But I am not like most Americans, I only watch the Super Bowl for the commercials!

1. Costs

So in case you didn’t realize this already, Super Bowl commercials are crazy expensive! In our textbook, Strategic Media Decisions, it states that “a 30-second spot, called a unit, on the 2006 Super Bowl cost over $2.5 million.” Like wow! I can’t even imagine that amount of money! This year a unit is said to be up to $3.8 million.

2. Is it worth it?

So do you think that it would be worth $3.8 million to run your commercial during the Super Bowl? I think yes. Imagine how many people watch the Super Bowl every year. According to International Business Times 111.3 million people watched the Super Bowl last year! Super Bowls are the top three most-watched television events in U.S. history! Holy moly! Also everyone watches the Super Bowl live, so they can’t skip through the commercials, which helps out advertisers. Knowing that nearly half of the American population will be watching one station at the same time is a great opportunity for advertisers to get to work.

3. Entertainment

I mean who doesn’t love Super Bowl commercials? That’s always what everyone is talking about the week following the big event. One of my personal favorites is M&M’s ‘I’m sexy and I know it’ commercial! Hilarious right? Here are the top ten commercials from 2012! I also love the vampire one ‘daylight now in a headlight…at least they don’t sparkle” It works because of The Twilight Saga that has been out for the past few years, and making fun of how those vampires would sparkle in daylight. I mean who cares about football? Let’s just watch some funny commercials about vampires and talking candy!

From Tablets to Tablets

It’s crazy how much media has changed over the years. This is a great media timeline. Here are a few of the main points: around the years of 3100 B.C. they had writings on tablets, in 600 B.C. they wrote on papyrus scrolls, and the Chinese paper didn’t arrive until 105 A.D. Then in 1455 the movable type is developed in Germany, and in 1907 regular radio broadcasts begin in the United States. Our textbook, Strategic Media Decisions by Marian Azzaro, states that “Radio was the undisputed king of media” by 1930. This is when radio became so popular, and direct advertising started. One advantage of the radio is that you can listen to it all the time, in your house and in your car. Radio is always there, which is great for advertisers. Fast forward to modern time and everything is digital! People send emails instead of writing letters. We went from a time without paper to a time where everything is digital. Can you imagine having to carve your words into a stone or clay tablet? I can’t! Today we have digital tablets that can do just about as much as a laptop! It’s hard to imagine life without the technology that we have today. We sure have come a long way!

Here is a brief video of the changes in media! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=japd126Nx1Y

My generation is so used to having our phone with us all the time, which today is practically a computer, gaming system and phone all in one. Our phones can access so many medium not to mention the media we get from our TV, computer, magazines, newspapers and more!

It is insane how much media we consume each day! Here is a site that has more detail on our media consumption. Americans consumed 1.27 trillion hours of media in 2008, says a study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego. Wow! When you think about it, we really do see media everywhere we go. You get in your car and you’ve got the radio, billboards, and more. Then you’ve got posters, commercials on TV and ads on the internet. The media is everywhere!
